Princess V58 – Germany

The Y88 motor boat is the next generation of Princess high-performance V Class sports yachts.

Made for outdoor living, yet with an ultra-spacious interior, it is 60ft long, with a speed range of 34 to 37 knots.

The Project

Berth Glaze was asked by the owner to work on both the sunroof and starboard window while the motor boat was in Norddeich, Germany.

The starboard window would not open and the sunroof would not open or close.

Two sets of glazing experts had already considered the problems and been unable to rectify them – We were able to resolve them quickly and efficiently.

Firstly, with the starboard window, he identified a fault with the top of the stainless steel rod, which is attached to the motor and the metal cap.

The cap was being pushed up when the mechanism was working, causing the bolt in the top of the metal rod to wear away.

We replaced the old motor with the new mechanism but found the cap was moving upwards away from the rod and the disconnection was stopping the motor.

To rectify this, we made a stainless-steel, L-shaped fixture and screwed it above the cap to hold it in place.

Then, despite limited access to the sunroof, he was able to make an assessment that four bolts had ripped away.

To overcome this, we suggested fitting a metal plate into the GRP to take the four bolts, as well as the weight of the roof.

"This project was challenging for many reasons, but we enjoyed working our way around the problems.

Our expertise and ingenuity allowed us to design a piece of equipment – and have it made locally – that solved one of the issues
