Classic Yacht Haida 1929

Haida 1929 – a rare classic yacht

Earlier this year Berth Glaze was privileged to work on the magnificent Haida 1929.

Built in 1929, this luxury vessel recently underwent extensive renovation at the world class Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, explains Berth Glaze founder Adem Gursoy.

“As part of the ongoing project to restore it to its former glory, we were privileged to work on it ourselves later on in Palma, replacing one of curved windscreens,” he says.

“It is such a beautiful classic yacht and it has now been restored to its original state, with immense attention to detail.

“As we would with any project, we took great care removing and replacing the glass and wooden frame; it was a pleasure to carry out the work.”

Built in 1929, by German shipbuilding company Krupp Germaniawerft, for the millionaire yeast magnate Max Fleischmann, the clipper-bow yacht was designed to have an 8,000-mile range for exploring the Pacific.

In 1940, Fleischmann sold the boat, originally named after the native Haida people of Alaska and British Columbia, to the US Navy and she became known as the USS Argus.

Since then, the luxury 71.1m vessel, which still has her original engines, has had a variety of names and high profile owners, including film producer Robert Stigwood.

With restorations overseen by award-winning superyacht designer Adam Lay, she retains her exquisite character inside and out.

Mahogany and white panelling features throughout and there are marble mosaics in guest cabins; original brass windows have been refurnished, polished and restored to pristine condition.

Yet the yacht, which is available to charter, also offers all the comfort, style and technology required by the 21st century voyager.

Up to 12 guests can be accommodated in seven rooms, including a master suite and VIP stateroom, while amenities include a spa pool, dip pool, massage room, Turkish bath, gym, and indoor and outdoor cinemas.

Adem adds: “Boats like Haida 1929 are rarities – it was exciting to be part of the restoration project and a privilege to work on such a unique classic yacht.”
